Stablecoin Backing Models
Stablecoins are typically backed by assets to maintain their value. Here are the main backing models: Fiat-Collateralized: These stablecoins are backed by a reserve of fiat currency, such as the US dollar. For example, Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC ) are backed by USD held in reserve. Crypto-Collateralized: These are backed by other cryptocurrencies. They use mechanisms like over-collateralization and smart contracts to maintain stability. An example is DAI , which is backed by various cryptocurrencies and is governed by the MakerDAO system. Algorithmic (Non-Collateralized): These stablecoins use algorithms and smart contracts to control the supply and demand of the coin, aiming to keep the price stable without backing by collateral. Examples include Terra (LUNA ) and Ampleforth (AMPL). Hybrid Models: Some stablecoins use a combination of the above methods, blending fiat and crypto collateral, or incorporating algorithmic adjustments to maintain stability. Each model has its own advantages and risks, impacting stability, transparency, and resilience.
