Vitalik Buterin Emphasizes the Importance of Layer-2s for Ethereum’s Advancement
- Buterin highlights the critical importance of Layer-2 in the future of Ethereum.
- Layer-2 solutions crucial for rate reduction and new applications.
- Community collaboration is essential for innovation and scalability on Ethereum.
Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, recently Buterin stressed the need to invest more in Layer 2 scaling technologies to improve network infrastructure. In a blog post, Buterin argued against abandoning Layer 2 solutions, stressing the importance of maintaining a continued focus on interoperability, security, and so-called blob transactions.
At the time of publication, the price of ETH was quoted at US$3.182,77 with an increase of 4% in the last 24 hours.
Blobs, which stand for “Binary Large Objects,” which were implemented during the EIP-4844 update, are designed to significantly reduce gas fees by allowing data to be temporarily stored on nodes for up to 18 days. This functionality aims to improve the efficiency and scalability of the network.
While some critics have suggested that Layer-2 solutions could diminish the value of ETH by reducing mainnet activity, Buterin argues that these technologies are essential to supporting a wide range of new applications and innovations. He notes that, “Layer-2 protocols (L2s) are the current direction for Ethereum scaling. The L2s of 2025 are far more advanced than the initial experiments of 2019, achieving significant decentralization milestones, securing billions in value, and increasing Ethereum’s transaction capacity by 17x, while decreasing fees accordingly…”
Buterin also values the community component of scalability, pointing to the support of several independent organizations that have contributed crucially to the technologies that allow “Ethereum to reach previously unimaginable heights. As a result, we are getting closer and closer to achieving the necessary escape velocity.”
Buterin concludes by expressing optimism: “the future of Ethereum is bright,” but reiterates that “there is still a long way to go, and now is the time to redouble efforts on Layer-2s.”
