President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team is considering Teresa Goody Guillén, a former SEC attorney, to lead the regulatory commission. According to industry sources, the blockchain-savvy lawyer remains a leading contender for the role, owing to her unique mix of regulatory expertise and blockchain knowledge.

Goody Guillén currently co-leads Baker Hostetler’s blockchain practice. With a background in securities, litigation, investigations, corporate governance, and digital assets, she has garnered support from crypto companies advocating for her appointment as the next SEC Chair. Recognized as a key advisor to blockchain platforms on securities laws, her expertise has been highlighted by Chambers FinTech Legal USA.

Following Trump’s election victory, the crypto community has speculated about SEC Chair Gary Gensler’s potential resignation. Trump’s commitment to replacing Gensler with a pro-crypto candidate has fueled discussions about possible successors, including Goody Guillén.

Acknowledging Goody Guillén as the best candidate, Brendan Playford, co-founder of the decentralized AI data and LLM network, Masa, stated, “We would just have an instant change-maker that would dramatically transform the industry with someone that’s very pro-crypto.” Playford added that Goody Guillén has a clear understanding of the SEC’s workings. Other potential candidates include Bob Stebbins, Brad Bondi, Paul Atkins, Dan Gallagher, Brian Brooks, Hester Pierce, and Mark Uyeda.

The talk on Gensler’s resignation has been fuelled by his recent speech at the Practising Law Institute’s 56th annual conference, where he reflected on his past experience with the SEC. Thus, the community expects Gensler to step down as the SEC Chair before Trump’s inaugural ceremony on January 20.
