Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has shared details about “The Splurge,” a part of Ethereum’s plan to improve its functionality. The Splurge includes various protocol improvements that are essential for upgrading the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).

Buterin explained that these improvements will increase EVM efficiency, address infrastructure needs, and introduce new functionalities to support Ethereum’s growth and security.

Addressing the EVM’s Limitations

Buterin pointed out that the current EVM has limitations that affect its efficiency and flexibility. The EVM’s structure makes it difficult to verify code and introduce extensions.

Also, the EVM’s structure limits advanced security operations, creating complexity. The Splurge, with the upcoming introduction of the Ethereum Object Format (EOF), aims to simplify code integration and improve the EVM’s functionality.

While EOF requires code expansion and more intensive static code checks, Buterin highlighted its benefits, such as simplifying EVM implementations. This could benefit Ethereum by allowing multiple L1 optimizations.

Layer Compatibility and Potential Benefits

By adjusting the EVM at the L1 level, Ethereum will improve compatibility with Layer 2 (L2) solutions. Buterin noted that isolated adjustments across layers could cause incompatibilities, limiting the network’s flexibility.

In addition, EVM-MAX and SIMD may help reduce gas fees, improving L2 efficiency and removing the need for precompiles.

The new features could enable quantum-resistant cryptography, multisig and social recovery wallets, and tiered security levels, allowing users to use different keys for different transactions. This could also simplify privacy protocols by removing the reliance on relayers, reducing centralization risks.

Community Concerns and Responses

After this announcement, community members expressed concerns about the complexity of these changes. One user, “Nightmvre,” questioned the practicality of the updates, while another, “Archetype0x,” suggested that Buterin focus on personal time management.
