  • Vitalik Buterin outlines Ethereum’s next evolutionary phase, “The Purge.”
  • The Purge aims to simplify the protocol and reduce node resource loads.
  • EIP-6780, implemented during last month’s Dencun hard fork, is crucial to The Purge.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has revealed the upcoming phases in the move to simplify the Ethereum protocol and reduce node resource loads, also known as “The Purge.” In a recent post on X, Buterin shared a quick note on The Purge.

Notably, The Purge marks one of the pivotal phases in Ethereum’s evolution, prominently highlighted within the project’s roadmap that Buterin revealed late last year. It entails removing obsolete network data and gradually simplifying the Ethereum infrastructure.

In addition to trimming down historical data storage, The Purge seeks to alleviate the technical cost of participating in the network by clearing old history.

In the latest update, Buterin highlighted the significance of Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP)-6780, which was implemented during last month’s Dencun hard fork . Buterin emphasized that EIP-6780 represents a crucial aspect often overlooked in Ethereum protocol development.

In parallel, he described this EIP as a significant component of The Purge, the initiative aimed at refining Ethereum and addressing technical debt. Moreover, Buterin hinted at the likelihood of more EIPs embodying a similar ethos in the future.

As a result, he underscored the need for comprehending both the mechanics of EIP-6780 in achieving its objectives. Concerning how EIP-6780 simplifies the Ethereum protocol, Buterin pointed out that it reduces the functionality of the SELF-DESTRUCT opcode.

This opcode, which typically destroys the contract that invokes it and clears its code and storage, is now restricted to only function if the contract was created during the same transaction.

Following the implementation of EIP-6780, there is a maximum limit on the number of storage slots that can be edited in a single block, roughly determined as the gas limit divided by 5000.
Expressing optimism, Vitalik Buterin remarked that Ethereum should aspire to be a clean and elegant protocol. While acknowledging that reaching this goal may involve short-term challenges, he emphasized that achieving such clarity’s long-term, unforeseen benefits are overwhelmingly positive.
