Civic launches physical ID card to combat AI-driven identity fraud
According to Blockworks, identity and access management solutions company Civic has launched a new physical ID card that Civic Pass holders can use to prove their identity and reduce the threat of AI-driven identity fraud. Civic Pass is a non-transferable token that is an identity-bound token that allows users to access decentralized applications and services by proving that they are legal persons. With the popularity of AI, new AI technologies are able to create realistic imagined scenes based on text and instructions. This has allowed the fraudulent identity market to flourish, allowing individuals to create fake IDs almost instantly. With physical IDs, users can be protected against a scheme called "face harvesting," in which malicious actors collect videos and selfies of people they are trying to impersonate in order to gain access to their online accounts. Vinny Lingham, co-founder and chairman of the board of directors of Civic, told Blockworks that criminals are increasingly using AI technology to bypass the checks and safeguards society has been using. He said: "We are very aware of the challenges that the rapid development of the AI world brings to human identity verification... By launching our physical ID cards, we are taking practical steps to prevent fraud in digital activities."
