  • The government will issue blockchain-based digital IDs.
  • Citizens will get to store identification documents in digital wallets.
  • The government announced its partnership with Web3 company Extrimian.

Despite its transformative potential, blockchain technology faces a formidable challenge with the recognition of its practical applications, and some regions struggle with harnessing its capabilities effectively.

Buenos Aires, Argentina’s capital city, has exemplified an ideal real-life use case by introducing a blockchain-powered digital identification system.

Digital ID Solution

On September 28th, the government of Buenos Aires unveiled a new digital identity solution in collaboration with Extriminan, an Argentina-based digital identity protocol company.

According to the official release , the initiative will revolutionize how citizens interact with their identification documents. It will offer an opportunity to securely store and manage data through blockchain technology, starting in October 2023.

To achieve this, the government plans to utilize Extrimian’s Ethereum scaling protocol, an application built on Matter Labs’ zkSync Era rollup known as QuarkID. This technology will power a cutting-edge digital identity system designed to store data as part of a technology-driven identification solution efficiently.

Diego Fernandez, Secretary of Innovation, stated that “The City of Buenos Aires is driving this new digital trust framework to function as a public good, returning control over data to individuals and enabling a more agile and secure digital interaction between government, companies, and people,”

Initially, the integration will focus on digitizing documents, including birth certificates, death certificates, and marriage licenses. The digital documents will work alternatively to original hard copies and not a replacement in its phase, ensuring flexibility for citizens.

The government aims to establish a full-fledged roadmap for the nationwide adoption of this blockchain solution by 2024, eventually incorporating data including health records and financial management features.
