Unsettling SHIB Telegram Hack Sends Shockwaves Through Community
- The Shiba Inu community spotted a suspicious message on Shiba Inu’s Telegram.
- Blockchain security auditors labeled September the worst month for crypto hacks.
- SHIB’s market price was untouched by the news, continuing to trade in consolidation.
The SHIB Army, the vast and active community behind the popular canine coin Shiba Inu (SHIB) became frustrated after seeing an awkward message on Shiba Inu’s official Telegram channel. Indeed, the channel has become the target of cybercriminals, as one of the admin’s accounts was hacked.
Ragnar SHIB, a prominent member of the community, emerged on Telegram to promote a supposedly free BONE airdrop to the channel members. However, SHIB Army members soon spotted the suspicious message and posted a warning across most Shiba Inu socials, including X, previously known as Twitter.
SHIB Team Member Dispatches Warning
Despite the phishing scam coming from a hijacked Ragnar SHIB account shocking many Shiba holders , the community took it upon themselves to step in on time and warn unsuspecting users not to click any links in the faux Bone ShibaSwap giveaway.
Fortunately, this incident has left Shiba Inu’s market value unmoved. SHIB still trades in phased consolidation with a slight 0.9% drop in the last 24 hours. On the other hand, BONE has lost 1.4% of its value since the incident, but the real-time on-chain signals provide other technical reasons for that, including an 8% daily drop in large transactions.
On the Flipside
- The reason behind this Telegram hack is still unknown.
- Several members of the SHIB Army argue that new security measures should be put into practice, as even 2FA authentication is not always sufficient.
- To solve this problem, multiple members argue that a Shiba Inu cybersecurity team must be assembled. Previously, this has been done in Susbarium, a scam prevention group that called out counterfeit Shibarium projects.
Why This Matters
Most popular cryptocurrencies are often becoming the targets of phishing scams. Security auditors CertiK labeled September 2023 to be the worst month for exploits in crypto history.
